The fifth episode of ‘Veep’ will take main protagonist Selina Meyer, played by the beguiling Julia Louis-Dreyfus, on the first thanksgiving since her mother’s death. The episode’s teaser opened to Selina’s daughter Catherine reminding her about it to which she replied, “There’s a lot to be thankful for.”
According to Broadway World, the upcoming episode will have Selina celebrating the family occasion while White House Chief of Staff Ben Cafferty (Kevin Dunn) and senior strategist Kent Davidson (Gary Cole) struggle with a Thanksgiving Day crisis. Tom James (Hugh Laurie) and VP Andrew Doyle (Phil Reeves) are left to make statements on her behalf.
One of television’s most popular political satires managed to take an emotional turn on the preceding episode, entitled “Mother”, as Selina shut down feelings of grief in favor of elation during a Nevada ballot recount that could possibly win her the presidency.
According to NY Times, episode 4 focused on Selina’s attempt at venturing into awkward emotional territory from her mother’s hospital death bed to her funeral while juggling a precarious political campaign in Nevada in which votes failed to add up in her favor.
Selina eventually took her mother off life support after being informed that her poll ratings would subsequently receive a “death bump” should her mother meet her demise. Despite this, Selina still found herself losing the popular vote count in the end.
HBO’s critically-acclaimed political satire comedy series earned Dreyfus numerous accolades including four consecutive wins for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series at the 64th, 65th, 66th, and 67th Primetime Emmy Awards. She is rumored to win a fifth one in the incoming awards season.
‘Veep’ follows the story of a fictional Vice President of the United States and her team as they navigate the challenges of day-to-day American politics at the office. Season 5’s episode 5 is set to air on HBO on May 22, 2016.
