‘Vikings’ season 4’s episode 11, entitled "The Outsider", will feature the return of Ragnar Lothbrok to his home in Kattegat. However, he will find that he now lacks allies despite his plans to correct past mistakes. It may be that only Ivar is willing to stay by his side.
The synopsis for “The Outsider” posted on Cartermatt reads, “Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) has returned to Kattegat and there are secrets to be revealed. He makes plans to return to Wessex to right past wrongs but finds that those who were once his closest allies now have plans of their own. Even the Lothbrok sons refuse to join their father’s mission – except one.”
The incoming episode will follow Ragnar’s unwelcome return to Kattegat. Although he plans to save face and return to Wessex, his now grown-up sons decide not to help their father with his missions. However, it was teased that his son Ivar the Boneless may be his only ally left.
It was previously revealed that the second half of season 4 will feature Ivar’s transformation into the ruthless Viking leader as Ragnar primes him to follow in his footsteps. According to Screener TV, actor Alex Hogh Andersen teased that his character Ivar will rise above his disability to become a powerful leader.
He said, “Being physically handicapped in a very physical Viking culture is just such a huge challenge for him. He’s always been the one sitting alone on the beach, watching his three brothers fishing… He’s always been the lone wolf — and that’s made him strong, because he’s chosen to fight every single day and become independent, even though that asks so much more of you, as a person, when you’re crippled in that culture.”
Andersen added, “What he doesn’t see, which is completely obvious to Ragnar, is he’s 100% stronger than everyone else — his brothers — because of his disability… Every single of his day of his life he’s compensated for that disability and because he’s done that he’s become such a strong character. And he’s so intelligent.”
Ivar the Boneless is known as one of history’s most powerful Viking warlords, who led his people during the invasion of what is now known as England. He ruled over an area covering parts of modern Denmark and Sweden. He was also reputed to be a berserker and would succumb to uncontrollable, destructive, and trance-like fury.
‘Vikings’ season 4’s episode 11, entitled "The Outsider", is scheduled to air on History on November 30, 2016. It will be followed by episode 12, entitled "The Vision", scheduled for December 7.
