“Vikings” fans know that the historical drama series does not pull its punches when it comes to character deaths. Even the series' first protagonist, Ragnar Lothbrok, played by Travis Fimmel, found his demise at the hands of King Aelle, played by Ivan Kaye.
As heartbreaking as it is to see Ragnar Lothbrok fall to Aelle's snake pit, it leaves viewers speculating if the rest of Ragnar's sons will see the same fate as their father considering the conflict that they find themselves in by the end of “Vikings” season 5's first half.
The end of the first half of “Vikings” season 5 has left Bjorn Ironside, played by Alexander Ludwig, and his mother Lagertha, played by Katherine Winnick, in utter defeat by another of Ragnar Lothbrok's sons, Ivar, who is played by Alex Hogh Andersen. It would seem that Kattegatt will be lost to Bjorn's bloodthirsty brother. Rollo, played by Clive Standen, returns but his role after the battle of Ragnar's sons has yet to be revealed.
The preview trailer for the second half of “Vikings” season 5 heavily features the return of Bjorn Ironside to Kattegatt to take it back from his brother. Aside from the battle for Kattegatt, the trailer features a subplot where Lagertha, Bjorn, and Ubbe, played by Jordan Smith, are met by King Alfred, who is enthusiastic about a potential alliance with the exiled sons of Ragnar Lothbrok.

Dedicated fans of the History Channel's “Vikings” would remember that the series is based on the historical text “Tale of Ragnar's Sons.” While the show has followed some aspects of the text such as Ragnar Lothbrok's death, there are some liberties that have been taken such as the conflict between Ragnar's own sons over the fictive town of Kattegatt.
In the original texts, Bjorn Ironside splits the kingdoms of his father with his brothers and dies of old age as a wealthy man. The more conflict-oriented Vikings may put a damper on what has been immortalized in texts, which could dictate a grimmer end for Bjorn Ironside in season 5's second half or even in “Vikings” season 6.
For those who can't wait to find out what happens after Bjorn and Lagertha are defeated by Ivar, season 5's second half is just less than four months away. “Vikings” season 5 will air on Nov. 28.
