Putting all the rumors regarding Microsoft Surface Mini to rest, Panos Panay, chief of Microsoft’s Surface team, told Wired that Mini, a small tablet, existed but was never shipped.
"It was like a Moleskine. It was awesome," Panay told Wired about the Surface Mini.
If it did reach the market, the Surface Mini could have competed with Apple's iPad Mini. Instead, the tech giant launched the Surface Book, a powerful laptop designed to dominate the market, TechTimes reported.
The rumors about the Surface Mini emerged last year when Vostrostone, a China-based electronic goods retailer, put up a listing for Surface Mini accessories on Amazon in April 2014, which led to speculation that the Surface Mini would be unveiled soon enough.
Later in May 2014, the Surface Pro 3 made its debut at a Microsoft event, but, the Redmond tech firm remained muted about the Surface Mini. However, the Surface Pro 3's release somehow pointed towards the Surface Mini's existence, as the user manuals contained several references to a “smaller gadget”, which Microsoft probably missed, TechTimes added.
The rumors relating to the Surface Mini re-surfaced online in July last year that suggested the small tablet was back in production and was slated for release in the summer. However, the rumor soon died down.
