Every community has endless vehicles that are needed to maintain the quality of life for their residents. Vehicles can range from police vehicles to garbage collectors to even animal services. The management of this is important, since it allows for workers to know where and when they need to arrive. It also helps the city ensure that services are being carried out.
This management is integral to keeping any city functioning. Here's how.
What Vehicles Are Managed?
Any vehicle owned by the city can be considered part of a municipal fleet, but there are some basic ones that every municipality has. These range from mail trucks to fire trucks and everything in between. Because these vehicles carry out services for those who live in the community, they’re considered part of the municipal fleet. Not every city owns the vehicles in its fleet. Some are rented from companies, and others are privately owned, but they all carry out the same work.
What Does Managing Entail?
Managing these fleets is like taking all of the work every personal car and vehicle needs and multiplying it by hundreds. The municipal fleet manager needs to ensure that all broken parts are fixed or replaced, that vehicles get their mandatory check-ups, and that drivers follow safety procedures to ensure no harm comes to any person or vehicle.
Management also entails keeping an eye on the workers themselves and keeping track of what's happening with each vehicle. For some municipalities, it can be hard to hire employees through all of the red tape, but a fleet manager can get through all of that. Public works fleet management is there to make it easier for the residents, the employees, and the municipality.
Who Manages Them?
Who manages these fleets can change from city to city and town to town. Most municipalities try to manage their fleets independently, hiring someone in public works to oversee everything. This is a difficult job because of how detail-intensive and constant it is. There's no room for error.
Some towns recently have voted to outsource this work, putting it on the shoulders of companies who specialize in this detailed work. Although it can often cost these towns a little more, in the end, it does offer plenty of benefits in the form of less paperwork and attention needed from the municipality itself.
What Happens If They’re Poorly Managed?
If a municipal fleet is poorly managed, this can lead to chaos within a community. Vehicles that are poorly maintained are more prone to breakdowns, and missing even one oil change can shorten a car's lifespan. Poor management can also lead to communities not getting the essential services they deserve instead of dealing with garbage build-up or delayed help when there's a wild animal in their yard.
Poor management can cost property damage and possibly even harm the people who rely on this municipality to protect and serve them. A well-managed municipal fleet is there to cover all of the residents.
