WhatsApp is prepared to introduce some new features in the coming months so they can offer a better experience for their customers. However, some iPhone users will have to upgrade their mobile devices if they want to continue using the messaging app because WhatsApp is planning to end support for iOS devices running on older operating systems.
Earlier this year, WhatsApp had announced that the app would continue to support iOS 7 and older versions of the operating system February 1, 2020, but in an updated post on the “Supported Devices” section of the website, the company informed users that they need to have iOS 8 or later to run the latest version of the app.
The statement reads: “WhatsApp for iPhone requires iOS 8 or later. On iOS 7.1.2, you can no longer create new accounts or reverify existing accounts. If WhatsApp is currently active on your iOS 7.1.2 device, you will be able to use it until February 1, 2020. iOS 6 and older are no longer supported.”
This means will affect WhatsApp customers who are still using older iPhones like the iPhone 4 because these devices no receive updates after iOS 7.1.2. This will also affect users of iPhone 4S, 5, 5C and 5S if they failed to update to a later version of the operating system.
WhatsApp also warned that the app might not work properly in jailbroken or unlocked iPhones.
“We don't explicitly restrict the use of jailbroken or unlocked devices. However, because these modifications might affect the functionality of your device, we can't provide support for devices using modified versions of the iPhone's operating system.”
Meanwhile, WhatsApp will also cease supporting phones using Android versions older than 2.3.3. Moreover, the app will not be available on phones running Windows Phone 8.0 or older. The company will also stop supporting customers using Nokia S40 after Dec. 31, 2018.
