Winter storm Devin caused widespread travel chaos across the United States on Friday, leading to thousands of flight cancellations and delays during one of the busiest holiday travel periods. According to FlightAware, as of 4:04 p.m. ET, a total of 1,802 flights had been canceled and 22,349 flights delayed nationwide, as airlines struggled to manage severe winter weather conditions.
The National Weather Service issued warnings that winter storm Devin would create hazardous travel conditions across the Great Lakes, northern Mid-Atlantic, and southern New England regions through Saturday morning. Forecasters predicted significant snowfall, particularly in areas from upstate New York to the Tri-State region, including New York City and Long Island, where 4 to 8 inches of snow were expected late Friday into the night.
Major airports in the New York metropolitan area, including John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport, warned travelers of potential delays and cancellations through official posts on X. More than half of all reported flight disruptions occurred at these three airports, highlighting the storm’s concentrated impact on the Northeast travel hub.
Among U.S. airlines, JetBlue Airways reported the highest number of cancellations, initially canceling 225 flights, with the total later rising to approximately 350 flights over Friday and Saturday. Delta Air Lines canceled 212 flights, Republic Airways canceled 157, American Airlines grounded 146 flights, and United Airlines canceled 97 flights. Several airlines, including American Airlines, United Airlines, and JetBlue, confirmed they were waiving change fees to allow affected passengers to rebook without additional costs.
In anticipation of worsening conditions, New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency on Friday afternoon. New York Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the need for preparedness as snowfall began across the region. New Jersey and Pennsylvania also imposed commercial vehicle restrictions on major highways to reduce road hazards, urging travelers to avoid unnecessary travel and allow road crews to manage dangerous conditions.
