In 1993, LucasArts released an X-Wing simulator that allowed fans to take the position of pilots in one of the most iconic spacecraft in movie history. Now, fans of the original remade the title and brought it up to scratch to suit more modern standards. The project is called XWMV and it makes use of the Unity engine to bring the classic simulator to current PC specs.
The XWMV project has been in development for two years by a team of modders, Digital Trend reports. The team is led by modder David Esparza Guerrero and he and his people released footage of what can be expected from this unofficial remaster of the 90s PC classic.
It’s worth noting that the prestige by the original X-Wing simulator was short lived when it first came out largely due to being shortly eclipsed by other similar simulators. One such example is the TIE Fighter simulator that was released by the same studio, which looked remarkably better than its predecessor.
For those who are familiar with the old problems involving PC compatibility issues, the matter of the original X-Wing’s system being built on the MS-DOS platform would be instantly understandable. This required the classic version to get reissued with emulation packages.
“After trying to find the perfect X-Wing edition and realizing that the closest one to perfection is virtually lost to us (the 1996 Mac PowerPC edition cannot be run at a decent speed on modern x86_64 machines), I started looking for the best way to improve X-Wing to get the best of all the editions,” Guerrero said.
Naturally, since this is tied to a Disney intellectual property, the modders were quick to point out that the simulator contains no copyrighted materials, Hot Hardware reports. Much of the assets within the simulation were either created from scratch or belonged to the personal copy of the original game.
