There have been several reports suggesting that Apple has a wide array of hardware products that will be announced in spring. For some time, a new iMac Pro has been rumored to be part of that list. However, a new update from display analyst Ross Young suggested that Apple fans might have to wait a few more months for the new all-in-one Mac computer.
Young, who is the CEO of the Display Supply Chain Consultants, has had several accurate predictions and reports about upcoming Apple devices’ specs and release dates. A few months ago, the analyst was one of the sources who suggested that the all-new iMac Pro would be announced in spring.
However, the DSCC updated its forecast for the 2022 iMac Pro and is now expecting the device to launch in the summer. Young did not provide an exact release date yet, but it appears that a launch during Worldwide Developers Conference -- usually held in June -- is unlikely. The analyst noted that the displays for the computer would be shipped starting in June, making a product launch in “August or September” more plausible.
Despite the rumored internal delay, Apple is not expected to change the planned specs for the 2022 iMac Pro. Young said the computer is still anticipated to feature a display with a mini-LED backlight solution. But the analyst said iMac Pro’s Liquid Retina XDR display would have fewer mini-LEDs and dimming zones.
It can be recalled that Apple started using a mini-LED display on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro released last year. The same technology was used for the latest MacBook Pros launched last October.
In an Apple Support page for the Liquid Retina XDR display, the company said the iPad Pro screen uses more than “10,000 custom-designed mini-LEDs spread uniformly across the entire back of the display.” These are grouped into more than 2,500 individually controlled local dimming zones. “This delivers incredibly deep blacks right next to bright image areas, achieving a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio,” Apple said.
In an earlier report, Young said Apple is also bringing the ProMotion tech to the upcoming iMac Pro that would allow its screen to deliver up to 120Hz refresh rates.
