The speculations on Apple’s next series of iPhones launching in 2020 has started early. But one of the most interesting reports about the supposed features on the iPhone 12 has something to do with improving the Face ID system.
iPhone 12 rumored specs and features: What to expect
The iPhone 12 is still expected to rely on facial recognition for its biometric authentication system heavily, but reports have it that changes are in order this year. Industry sources claim that Apple is working on an improved version of the Face ID slated to be unveiled in the coming months.
The report comes from Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis, Thomas O'Malley, and Baylie Harri suggesting that Apple will equip the iPhone 12 with a “refreshed” TrueDepth sensor. This is the main component that does the work for the Face ID responsible for the 3D mapping of the face of the iPhone user. MacRumors was also told that Apple could add a lens on the rear side of the iPhone 12 with a 3D sensing capacity.
With the TrueDepth sensor and the rear-facing camera system expected to receive major upgrades this year, iPhone 12 is even more likely to have a more secure Face ID feature. On the downside, this suggests that improvements might not be made available through over-the-air updates for earlier iPhones. The Face ID debuted alongside the iPhone X in 2017.
Other rumors have it that Apple is going all-out in adding new features and improved specs on the iPhone 12. The smartphone lineup is widely expected to be Apple’s first device to support 5G connectivity. But the one aspect that Apple fans have been wanting to change – the switch from the Lightning port to USB-C – may not be happening anytime soon. The same sources, as well as renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, have stated on separate occasions that his change might not take place until 2021.
iPhone 12 release date is still strongly expected to happen in fall
If there is one thing that is easier to predict the iPhone 12, it is the possible release date. Apple has been very consistent with its annual unveiling events and has always dedicated September for the announcement of the latest iterations of the iPhone. While it is still best to wait for Apple’s official word, it is also safe to assume that the iPhone 12 models will be revealed sometime in fall.
