At least two Palestinians were killed and several others were wounded in an Israeli airstrike in central Gaza City on Sunday, according to Palestinian health officials, as violence continued despite an October ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Medical sources said the strike targeted a group of people on Omar Al-Mokhtar Road, one of Gaza City's main streets. Emergency responders confirmed that two people were killed and multiple others sustained injuries in the attack.
The Israeli military did not immediately issue a statement regarding the reported strike.
Although a U.S.-mediated ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has been in place since October last year, Israeli forces have continued conducting military operations across Gaza. Israel says the strikes are aimed at militants who pose threats to its troops or individuals linked to the Hamas-led October 2023 attack.
Hamas has repeatedly accused Israel of breaching the ceasefire agreement through ongoing military actions. Meanwhile, Nikolay Mladenov, the Board of Peace envoy to Gaza appointed by U.S. President Donald Trump, has stated that both Israel and Hamas have committed violations of the truce.
Efforts to move forward with the second phase of the ceasefire remain stalled as indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas continue. The unresolved issues include Hamas' disarmament, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, and broader security arrangements, preventing meaningful progress toward a lasting agreement.
The prolonged impasse has contributed to continued instability in the enclave, with periodic military strikes and exchanges of fire undermining hopes for a durable peace.
According to figures released by both sides, more than 1,060 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire took effect eight months ago, many of them civilians. Israel has also reported the deaths of four of its soldiers during the same period. Hamas has not publicly disclosed the number of its fighters killed since the ceasefire began.
