‘The Wolf Man’ screenplay is set to be written by ‘The Expendables’ scribe Dave Callaham. It was previously rumored that the reboot will star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the lead role.
According to Den of Geek, Dave Callaham is set to write the screenplay for Universal Pictures’ planned reboot of ‘The Wolf Man’. The 38-year old film writer is best known for his work on several full-feature films including 2005’s ‘Doom’, 2009’s ‘Horsemen’, 2010 and 2012’s ‘The Expendables’ series, and 2014’s ‘Godzilla’. He is also set to write for the yet untitled ‘Zombieland’ sequel.
Callaham is tasked to re-write the draft of the screenplay prepared by Aaron Guzikowski, who is known for his screenplays for ‘Prisoners’ and ‘Friday The 13th.’ The planned film is part of Universal’s series of monster movie reboots, which includes Alex Kurtzman’s upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film ‘The Mummy’ starring Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Sofia Boutella, Jake Johnson, and Annabelle Wallis in the principal cast.
Although not much is known about the remake’s plot, it is set to focus on the character Larry Talbot, heir to the Talbot family fortune and castle. The 1941 drama-horror film of the same name was Universal’s second werewolf film following 1935’s ‘Werewolf in London.’ It starred Lon Chaney, Jr. as Larry Talbot a.k.a. The Wolf Man and was deemed a critical success.
In the 2010 remake, Benicio del Toro starred as Lawrence Talbot a.k.a. The Wolf Man. He was joined by Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving, and Geraldine Chaplin in the new cast. Director Joe Johnston’s remake was released to negative reviews and bombed at the box office after earning only $139.79 million against a production budget of $150 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
According to /Film, early rumors suggested that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would be playing the lead role in the new ‘The Wolf Man’ film but this has yet to be confirmed.
‘The Wolf Man’ is a planned horror film intended as a remake of the original 1941 film of the same name. It is scheduled to be released sometime in 2018.
