Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have already made it clear that they definitely want to end their marriage. But, before doing so, they first need to agree on custody arrangements involving their six children. As far as recent reports go, resolution for this aspect appears to still be in limbo.

Family law experts have suggested that if both parties do not come up with an agreement anytime soon, they could face public trial to resolve the custody battle, according to a report from USA Today on Thursday. This would result in another media frenzy, which both Jolie and Pitt might want to avoid.

Unfortunately, there are reportedly several indications that the legal proceedings for Jolie and Pitt to settle the custody of their six children are “heading south.” Jeffrey Cohen of New York's Cohen Goldstein told USA Today that Jolie’s sudden change in her lawyer is a sign of an “an adversarial stand.” The family law expert added, “This is a sign of the deterioration of the litigation, of the relationships.”

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt announced they filed for divorce in January 2017. The estranged couple was handling the proceedings in private until, in August, Jolie’s camp called out Pitt for allegedly not paying “meaningful child support since separation.”

Pitt’s camp immediately denied these claims and responded by revealing that Jolie owes the actor $8 million, which she used to buy her current home. Pitt’s lawyers also stated that, since the separation, he has paid $1.3 million in child support.

Their divorce and custody battle became more publicized when court documents were leaked a couple of weeks after their media spat over child support payments. The Blast reported that the judge ordered Jolie to allow her children to have a relationship with their father. Otherwise, she could totally lose custody.

If Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt will not be able to reach an agreement, the possibility of having an open trial looms. “If it goes to an open trial (with) public proceedings, this would be as juicy as they come. These are two of the most well-known actors on the planet,” Cohen said.
