With a new installment coming up, the possibilities are endless for the characters of “Blue Bloods” season 9. As for Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) in particular, he might be getting another chance at love with the sudden return of Kelly Peterson (Bebe Neuwirth).
It was in 2013 when Neuwirth signed to join the CBS police procedural drama for a recurring role and only for a limited time. But since then, her character has become one of the favorites in the series. So fans were obviously delighted to see her again before season 5 ended. But will she be back again for “Blue Bloods” season 9?
Kelly was first introduced as inspector general in the series. And she was typically in disagreement at times with Frank given the nature of their work and positions. But the two always maintained a casual relationship amid work-related differences. After grieving the sudden death of his wife, Frank may be needing to find a new love interest.
However, it is also important to note that producers of the show previously confirmed Neuwirth’s commitment to the police drama was only temporary. So nothing is definite yet about Kelly’s return in “Blue Bloods” season 9. But, just like fans, the people behind the show are also hoping to see more of Kelly in the next season.
In a previous interview with TV Insider, executive producer Kevin Waid said, “We are very much hoping to have her back recurring as that character.” Wade added in the interview last May that they have been to several meetings brainstorming for stories related to the character of Kelly.
Wade also reaffirmed the underlying potential for romance between Frank and Kelly. “There is a mutual respect there and a little spice of mutual attraction, even though they often work from opposite sides of the table,” the EP said.
When Bebe Neuwirth first signed to join “Blue Bloods,” it can be recalled that her character was always written with a fleeting past with Frank when “sparks definitely flew” between them. And now that Frank is a totally single man, it could be the perfect time to continue their love story.
It is yet to be confirmed whether Neuwirth will sign again for the series. And whether or not Frank and Kelly will pursue a romantic relationship is a mystery to be answered once “Blue Bloods” season 9 airs on Friday, Sept. 28, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
