A new biography about Prince Harry has sparked sharp backlash after claiming that Queen Camilla allegedly told a friend that Harry had been "brainwashed" by his wife Meghan Markle. A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex wasted no time firing back, calling the claim a "deranged conspiracy" in a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday.
The book, written by royal biographer Tom Bower — known for his previous works on the British royal family — draws on accounts suggesting that tensions between Harry, Meghan, and the rest of the royals began almost immediately after their widely celebrated May 2018 wedding. Extracts from the biography, published in the Times newspaper, portray a royal household deeply divided, with Prince William and Princess Kate reportedly viewing Meghan as a disruptive influence on Harry.
Harry and Meghan stepped back from their royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California, effectively distancing themselves from the monarchy. Since then, the couple's relationship with the royal family has remained strained, with Harry reportedly having had very little contact with his father, King Charles, in recent years.
The biography also touches on Prince Harry's reported distress over the downfall of his uncle, Prince Andrew, who lost his royal titles and was removed from his residence following his controversial ties to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. According to Bower, Harry feared a similar fate — being cast out by his own family.
Despite the serious allegations, Buckingham Palace declined to comment on behalf of King Charles and Queen Camilla, and no response came from representatives of Prince William and Kate either.
Harry and Meghan's spokesperson did not hold back, accusing Bower of going beyond fair criticism and veering into obsession, stating that those seeking facts would look elsewhere.
