North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for modernizing the country's military to prepare for potential conflicts, state media KCNA reported Wednesday. During a visit to the Kang Kon Military Academy, Kim emphasized building a technologically advanced army capable of handling modern warfare.
His visit follows reports that North Korea has deployed thousands of troops to Russia in support of its war against Ukraine. South Korea’s intelligence agency has suggested that Kim’s military inspections may indicate plans for additional troop dispatches.
Kim criticized the military academy’s outdated educational facilities, stating they fall short of the ruling party’s vision for modernization. He ordered improvements to enhance practical training, enabling students to gain real battlefield experience and master advanced weaponry.
"The current global situation, marked by growing imperialist aggression and frequent warfare, demands that our armed forces be fully prepared for conflict," Kim said, according to KCNA.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials report that North Korean forces have suffered significant casualties, with over 3,000 soldiers killed or wounded by early January. Experts warn that North Korea may gain valuable combat experience from its involvement in Russia’s war, potentially strengthening its military capabilities.
Kim also visited the Kim Il Sung University of Politics this week, urging loyalty and sacrifice from the military. These moves highlight Pyongyang’s continued focus on military expansion and strategic alliances amid increasing global tensions.
