'Outlander' Season 4 Air Date, Spoilers: Is Tobias Menzies's Villain Returning in Upcoming Installment?

Fans looking forward to “Outlander” season 4 have not had any rest from being told that Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe's Jamie and Claire Fraser have to expect danger at every corner as they enter the new world of North Carolina in the late 1700s.

“Downtown Abbey” alum Ed Speleers is already set to play “Outlander” season 4's primary antagonist, the force of nature Stephen Bonnet. But Sam Heughan may just have teased a potential plot point about “Outlander” season 4 on Instagram.

In a snapshot by Express, one of Sam Heughan's Instagram stories was documented showing a picture of a bottle of lager with the name Jack Black printed on it. Heughan appears to have written the words “Black Jack's Alive?” on the image, referring to Tobias Menzie's villainous character, Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall. While not an obvious “Outlander” season 4 post – Heughan's image may simply be taken as a joke – the nature of shows like “Outlander” means that fans will be speculating about the implications of such a post coming from one of the show's lead actors.

Fans of Diana Gabaldon's “Outlander” series of books will know that Black Jack Randall does not come back from the dead after Jamie Fraser slays him during the Battle of Culloden. Fans will also know that Black Jack Randall's death in the season 3 premiere episode was particularly intimate, leaving no doubt as to the fate of Tobias Menzies's character. Fans who buy into the theory that Black Jack Randall makes it back on the show in “Outlander” season 4 should understand that the chances of Tobias Menzies returning are pretty slim.

While “Outlander” has been somewhat faithful to its source material, the show is not without its occasional fan displeasure at the show's deviation from Diana Gabaldon's books. But the past deviations that the show has taken from its source material would not be as significant as bringing Randall back from the dead. A drastic rewriting of the series's greatest villain's death would either cause massive fan displeasure or make the narrative even more exciting for “Outlander” season 4.

Fans of the Frasers who can't wait to know about their adventures in the great North Carolinan wilderness can look forward to “Outlander” season 4 airing its premiere episode on Nov. 4.
