“Riverdale” season 3 looks to be shaking up how it treats the show's side characters with a potential change in storyline focus for the upcoming season.
Fans of the original “Archie” comics may have a lot of things to both love and hate about The CW's teen drama based on the popular comic “Riverdale.” “Riverdale” is currently looking towards its upcoming third season, and to say that the show has taken liberties in adapting its source material is an understatement.
One of the more significant changes to the “Archie” comics dynamic that “Riverdale” has created is the relationship between Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart). While the original comics paired both Cooper and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) in a will-they-won't-they love triangle with Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), “Riverdale” has gone in the direction of romantically pairing Betty Cooper with Jughead.
This romantic direction means that Jughead's original love interest, Ethel Muggs, played by “Stranger Things” actress Shannon Purser, has become more of a wallpaper character throughout “Riverdale's” first few seasons. But fans of such background characters from the comics have a bit more hope for other characters getting the spotlight in “Riverdale” season 3.
Shannon Purser, in a recent interview with Bustle, teased about how Ethel Muggs will be taking on a more active role in the third season, possibly in conflict with the Lodge family that is currently working towards Hiram Lodge's (Mark Consuelos) political ambitions. As fans may remember, Ethel Muggs has been antagonistic towards Veronica Lodge due to the Lodge family's actions costing the Mugss family their livelihood. While Ethel Muggs only posed as a distraction to Veronica Lodge's own school council aspirations, fans may get a glimpse of Ethel Muggs taking a more active role in the community in protesting the Lodge family's developments around Riverdale.
Fans who are excited for this potential development in “Riverdale” season 3's plot can look forward to the show airing its premiere episode on Oct. 10.
