Hussein Mohammed

Prof. Hussein Mohammed was born to the Mohammed family of Afoko quarters, Imiokono-Jagbe, Etsako-West Local Government of Edo State, Nigeria.

He attended Immaculate Conception College (ICC) Benin City between 1970 and 1974, where he obtained his West African School Certificate; and Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, in 1975 where he obtained his Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Civil Engineering/Building in 1977.

He was admitted into the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) to the Civil Engineering programme. He graduated from the University in 1982 with a good Honours degree. Twenty years later (2002), he enrolled at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Ibadan for the M.Sc. programme. He had his M.Sc. degree in 2004 with grades that qualified him to proceed to the PhD programme. He was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) of the University of Ibadan in 2010.

He was elected a member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in March, 1989 and registered by the Council for the Registration of Engineers in Nigeria (COREN), in July, 1990.

He had the National Youth Service in 1982-1983 as an engineer with an indigenous engineering and construction company, O.V. General Contractors, where he was responsible for the supervision of the construction of some buildings by the company for the Federal Government of Nigeria. The company offered him a permanent appointment a day after the completion of the Youth Service programme.

He moved to the Capital Project Unit, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife in 1983 as a Resident Engineer and voluntarily withdrew his services from the University to take up the job of pioneer Managing Director of Capnice Engineering and Construction Company Limited, Lagos and held this position for ten years. He has served as Associate Consultant to Rafola Ayibiowu Engineering Limited, Amana Consortium Limited, Delkem Associates, amongst others. In 2006, Polytran Engineering Associates appointed him as the Project Manager, for the Akwa-Ibom International Airport.

He taught briefly at Lagos State University, Epe in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He rejoined Obfemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, in 2010 as a Lecturer Grade I in the Department of Civil Engineering. He attained the rank of a Senior Lecturer in 2014, Reader in 2018 and Professor, in 2021.

Prof. Mohammed has published articles in reputable peer-reviewed local and international scientific and engineering journals in addition to technical reports. He has attended conferences/seminars in engineering, nationally and internationally. He serves as an external examiner to local and foreign universities as well reviewer to local and international journals.

Prof. Mohammed, continuously contributes to the development of whatever community he is in. As an undergraduate, he demonstrated exemplary leadership qualities among his colleagues and was elected President of the Muslim Students’ Society, University of Ife Branch 1979/80 academic session, Public Relation Officer, Association of Civil Engineering Students, University of Ife Branch in 1980 and member of the students’ Representative Council for the 1981/82 academic session. He was Secretary, Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Community, 1986 – 1992, Secretary, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Ile-Ife Branch and Chairman, 1991 and 2016-2018 respectively and Chairman UNIFEMGA, OAU, Branch, 2015 – 2017. He is currently the Chairman, Governing Board, UNIFEMGA Preparatory School, Ile-Ife.
