NEW ALBANY, Ind., April 23, 2017 -- 1st Choice Health & Wellness has announced the arrival of the only FDA approved laser for the treatment of plantar fasciitis. This new advancement, the FX635 laser, has been shown to reduce pain even in those who have suffered for five years with no relief from more conservative treatments. Pain reduction was dramatic, with a study showing self-reported pain dropping from 68 on the VAS pain scale, all the way down to just eight. Notably, this laser is not used as a surgical tool, but instead, used to promote the body's own healing process.
Plantar fasciitis is a heel condition that can cause so much pain that it is hard or impossible to walk. It is characterized by the feeling of trying to walk with a rock in the shoe, and when it gets worse, may feel as if the rock is in the actual heel. The pain becomes intense and sharp after the condition worsens. Often, the first few steps of the day are the worst, but this effect can also occur any time the sufferer has been off of their feet for a few hours.
"Many things contribute to a bout of plantar fasciitis. It can be set off by jobs requiring long hours of standing or walking, shoes that don't fit quite right, poor gait, and other causes. The condition involves a band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot, which becomes inflamed over time. While this band goes all the way from the heel to the bottom of the toes, the pain is usually first felt at the connection point at the heel," explained Dr. L. Christopher Nunier of 1st Choice Health & Wellness.
Often, all it takes to treat the condition is modified activity or special stretches. However, this doesn't work for all patients. Until recently, the only solution for them was surgery. This has changed with the Food and Drug Administration's recent approval of the FX635 laser, made by Erchonia Laser Healthcare. The laser is of a new type that is used to stimulate healing rather than perform surgery.
"Most medical lasers are used simply as alternatives to scalpels, but the principle behind this one is different. Instead of directly modifying tissue like surgery would, it causes the body to greatly accelerate its own healing process. We're excited to be able to offer this to our patients. It's a great way to go beyond conventional treatments without moving into surgery," said Dr. Nunier.
