Since its release earlier this year, the video game Cuphead has earned a reputation among the newer generation of gamers as a challenging title. It also gained huge critical praises for its polished controls, completely unique art style, and rewarding gameplay. A result of its popularity is apparently a video game app for iOS devices that costs $4.99 and is completely fake, according to the developers of the game.
The app, which appears to have passed Apple’s App Store screening is not an official mobile title from Studio MDHR. Ryan Moldenhauer, one of the people behind the game said as much in a Tweet, effectively telling users to stay away from the app.
There is a Cuphead imposter app on the iOS store -- this is a scam. We are working on removing the fraudulent app ASAP!

“There is a Cuphead imposter app on the iOS store -- this is a scam. We are working on removing the fraudulent app ASAP!” the Tweet reads.
Right now, the game is only available for the PC and the Xbox One console and is not found anywhere else. The app has since been pulled off the store but Apple has refused to comment on the issue, CNET reports.
It seems publications are also having quite a bit of fun looking into this particular case, especially with regards to the kinds of information that the creator of the fake app used. For example, the URL for the website attached to the app is “studiomdhrgames.com” and the address of the creator is listed as “Wasinghton, Wasinghton.”
The site is apparently registered to a person named Walter Gregor, as well. For context, the official website of the real developers of Cuphead is studiomdhr.com and no Walter Gregor is listed as an employee in the company.
As The Verge notes, it’s not at all surprising that a scam ripping off Cuphead would exist. After all, the game is hugely popular right now. However, what is surprising is how fake apps keep getting past Apple’s screening process. A few days ago, it was also discovered that a fake cryptocurrency app had made it to the App Store.
