AMD's upcoming Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X "Zen 5" CPUs have been tested in newly leaked benchmarks, revealing significant performance improvements in default and Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) configurations. These benchmarks highlight AMD's latest processors' potential to reshape the competitive landscape in the CPU market.
Performance Benchmarks
The Ryzen 7 9700X is an 8-core processor, while the Ryzen 5 9600X features six cores, both targeting mainstream users. Benchmarks reveal that the Ryzen 7 9700X scored 863 points in CPU-z's single-core test and 8,237 points in the multi-core test under default settings. In Cinebench R23, it achieved 2,218 points in single-core and 20,125 points in multi-core tests. When PBO was enabled, the CPU-z scores increased to 887 and 8,748, respectively, while Cinebench scores rose to 2,280 for single-core and 21,533 for multi-core tests.
The Ryzen 5 9600X also showed impressive results, with default settings yielding 849 points in CPU-z's single-core test and 6,179 points in the multi-core test. In Cinebench R23, it scored 2,160 points in single-core and 16,205 points in multi-core tests. With PBO enabled, the scores improved to 875.2 in CPU-z's single-core and 6,595 in the multi-core tests, while Cinebench results increased to 2,244 for single-core and 17,037 for multi-core tests.
Percentage Gains
The performance gains enabled by PBO are notable. The Ryzen 7 9700X saw a 2.78% increase in CPU-z single-core performance and a 6.20% rise in multi-core performance. In Cinebench R23, the improvements were 2.79% for single-core and 6.99% for multi-core tests. Similarly, the Ryzen 5 9600X experienced a 3.06% boost in CPU-z single-core performance and a 6.73% increase in multi-core performance. Cinebench R23 results showed a 3.88% rise in single-core and a 5.13% gain in multi-core performance.
Gaming Performance
In gaming benchmarks, the Ryzen 7 9700X was tested with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 GPU in Cyberpunk 2077 at 720p to evaluate CPU-side performance. The CPU achieved an average frame rate of 251.05 FPS in default settings, which increased to 256.26 FPS with PBO enabled, marking a 2.07% improvement. Maximum FPS rose from 335.99 to 343.17, while minimum FPS saw a slight decrease from 144.31 to 129.97.
Technical Details and Launch Information
The new CPUs also demonstrated excellent thermal and power efficiency, with the Ryzen 7 9700X peaking at 66°C and 87.8W under the AIDA64 stress test. However, some units were found to have erroneous integrated heat spreaders (IHS), which were labeled incorrectly as Ryzen 9 9700X instead of Ryzen 7 9700X. AMD attributed this to quality control issues.
The AMD Ryzen 9000 "Zen 5" desktop CPUs, including the Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X, are set to hit retail shelves in August, with an expected release date of August 8th. These CPUs are anticipated to offer substantial improvements for gamers and professionals, maintaining AMD's competitive edge in the processor market.
