It is now close to a year since Alita (Rosa Salazar) was introduced to movie fans worldwide. However, companies attached to the making of the movie have yet to make an announcement about its sequel, possibly titled “Alita: Battle Angel 2.”
Fans have devised several ways to make it known that they are going to support “Alita: Battle Angel 2” once it hits the big screen. But Salazar has offered an explanation of why the confirmation of the sequel is taking a very long time.
‘Alita: Battle Angel 2’: Possible reasons the sequel announcement has not happened yet
When Salazar discussed the future of “Alita: Battle Angel 2” with SlashFilm, the actress mentioned that the Fox and Disney merger could be a major factor in the delayed decision about the sequel. The two companies completed the deal last March 20, just over a month since “Alita: Battle Angel’s” Valentine’s Day premiere.
“The whole Disney/Fox acquisition is so involved,” Salazar said. “This isn’t the right time for me to call Alan Horn and be like, ‘Hey bro, I know you got a lotta stuff going on, but like what about ‘Alita: Battle Angel 2’?” Horn is the co-chairman and chief creative officer of The Walt Disney Studios. And considering the magnitude of movie and TV franchises involved in this massive reorganization, fans might have to wait a long time for the official word on the sequel.
Another possible consideration for Fox and Disney is the first movie’s box office performance. “Alita: Battle Angel” had a reportedly steep budget of $170 million. Its theatrical release garnered over $404 million with the domestic (United States) gross share only at $85 million. Scott Mendelson for Forbes noted that these numbers, especially considering the per-region ticket sales, made the “Alita: Battle Angel 2” production “less likely.”
‘Alita: Battle Angel 2’: First movie gathers more fans about a year since its release
With its theatrical and home media releases now over, the first movie is slowly making its way to Fox’s cable networks. This might explain why the support for the making of “Alita: Battle Angel 2” is steadily growing months after its original premiere on the big screen.
Just last month, #AlitaSequel suddenly went trending on Twitter after getting shared for around 33,000 at a certain period. A Change.org petition that started 10 months ago has amassed close to 133,000 signatures as of this writing.
