It is now starting to look like as long as Disney and 20th Century Fox do not announce the production of “Alita: Battle Angel 2,” more movie fans are going to demand a sequel. Despite the companies’ silence on the movie possibly becoming a series, a growing number of fans have expressed their support through an online petition over the last weeks.
'Alita: Battle Angel 2' release date, sequel announcement still elusive despite growing demand online
“Alita: Battle Angel” is the live-action adaption of the Japanese manga “Battle Angel Alita” that premiered worldwide last February. Since then, the studios attached to releasing the movie remain silent whether a sequel would be released in the future. So it is interesting to see that more fans are demanding updates and wanting “Alita: Battle Angel 2” to be made, especially in the previous weeks.
At the latest, the Change.org petition dedicated to “Alita: Battle Angel 2” has surpassed the 88,000-mark. It should be noted that, just three weeks ago, the number of petitioners were only at 75,000. The advent of social media and other online platforms has proven what it can do to save axed TV shows or movies. So it is remiss to rule out the possibility for these online signatures to eventually convince Disney to announce “Alita: Battle Angel 2.”
The movie produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez is a new title for many moviegoers, especially in the West. It is then not surprising that “Alita: Battle Angel 2” has not been confirmed yet following the Disney and 20th Century Fox merger earlier this year. But if the growing demand would keep its momentum, a sequel production is not too far-fetched.
'Alita: Battle Angel 2' plot is set up by the first movie’s ending
One good thing about waiting for “Alita: Battle Angel 2” is that the first movie’s ending was written in a way that sets up a good premise for a sequel. The name of the mad scientist Nova was mentioned throughout the entire movie; though, he was not physically present as Alita’s (Rosa Salazar) main adversary.
However, fans were treated with a post-credits scene revealing that Nova is played by Edward Norton. This suggests that Alita’s story has not fully concluded yet. Given Nova’s abilities and resources, he has the potential to play the main villain role more in “Alita: Battle Angel 2.”
