Fans want “Alita: The Battle Angel 2” after James Cameron finally released the first movie earlier this year. The famous director based this film in Gunnm, the 1990s classic Japanese Manga series authored by Yukito Kishiro.
“Alita: Battle Angel” has been in development since 2000, but it was severely delayed due to Cameron’s schedule. He is involved in the production of the “Avatar” film series, so he lost time to focus on “Alita.” As revealed on TV Spoilers, it was only in 2016, when his friend Robert Rodriguez, took over as the director that it was finally completed and released.
Now, as for “Alita: Battle Angel 2” is it in production already? The answer is no. However, James Cameron made it clear that he and Rodriguez have plans for it. In fact, the ending of the first movie calls for a continuation, so a sequel is to be expected.
"Well, we obviously have a plan for that but it's cheeky to set up a sequel before you're proven," Cameron told Digital Spy. “That can blow back in your face. We think of something like Warcraft that was clearly set up with the intention to do sequels, and then it becomes mock-able because the film doesn't succeed.”
While he is obviously referring to how “Alita: The Battle Angel” will do in the box-office, the director said that he actually don’t worry about the film’s success but if they would like to produce “Alita: The Battle Angel 2,” then the viewers’ response is a big contributing factor.
On the other hand, Rodriguez affirmed that they really want to do “Alita: The Battle Angel 2” and in fact, they have the drafts for its story and script. In any case, while there is no announcement yet, the best guess is that the sequel will be in production soon. The movie was a big success at the box-office after all so there is no reason why Cameron and Rodriguez will not push through with the project.
