Thanks to an issue involving an expired certificate, all Oculus Rift headsets in the hands of consumers shut down and could not be used. This was discovered after users started posting about the problem, which resulted in people digging deep into the code of the headset. Eventually, the problem was identified to be due to the Oculus Runtime Service, specifically due to OculusAppFramework.dll.
As of writing, there appears to be no permanent solution provided by Oculus, Neowin recently reported. The only workaround that has been found to work so far is to manipulate the headset’s date so that it reflects a time that is several hours before the certificate expired.
Unfortunately, this solution also comes with its own problems, with some apps depending on the correct date to actually function. Without it, some of the features or even the whole game might not be available.
Once the issue was revealed to the public, Oculus co-founder Nate Mitchell took to Twitter to assure users that they were aware of the problem and that they are now working on a solution to this problem. Meanwhile, owners of the Rift are being told to regularly check the forums to get updates.
As The Verge notes, solving this particular issue shouldn’t pose much of a challenge for the company. Perhaps it’s simply a matter of someone forgetting to push a button or other. The only real question here is whether or not it’s going to be released soon or a week from now.
It’s certainly inconvenient for many users that they are unable to use their headsets and play with their VR games simply because someone at the company failed to do their job. At this point, the only thing that users will be able to do is to actually just wait until the problem has been fixed. It’s either that or keep rewinding the time in their headsets.
