“Altered Carbon” Season 2 still doesn’t have a release date yet although production for it already began last month. As such, fans of the sci-fi drama can expect it to drop in the latter months of 2019 or the first quarter of 2019. That’s the optimist lens, at the least.
Regarding the plot of “Altered Carbon” Season 2, there’s still no solid news about it either. However, there’s a lot of source material for showrunner Laeta Kalogridis to draw inspiration from. The plots of “Broken Angels” and “Woken Furies” is expected to make their way in the series although Kalogridis did say she’s not going to be faithful with its plot, Variety reported.
“[Author Richard K. Morgan] has a very big-budget brain. The second book involves a worldwide war with nuclear explosions, some space travel, a giant alien dreadnought and an interstellar fight between aliens. It is prohibitively expensive in scope,” the showrunner said. Some of the themes of “Altered Carbon” Season 2 will also touch upon gender fluidity, which kind of makes sense given how Morgan wrote the world.
For the unaware, the series is set in a far distant future where the rich and powerful have attained immortality. This has been achieved through the full digitization of the human consciousness that can be stored in chips called “stacks.” These stacks can then be slotted into any artificially-made bodies called “sleeves.” As such, a man slipping into a woman’s body is easily justifiable, and Kalogridis will use this premise in “Altered Carbon” Season 2 to explore LGBTQ+ issues that have yet been tapped.
As for the cast, Joel Kinnaman will not be returning in the series as Kovacs. Instead, Netflix has chosen Anthony Mackie to play the highly-skilled soldier. Detective Ortega (Martha Higareda) will unlikely be included in “Altered Carbon” Season 2 as it’s supposedly going to be set 30 years from where the series left off, Radio Times reported.
It’s also unclear whether or not Poe (Chris Conner) will make it to the second installment. However, the actor did hint at a possible return after speculations started spreading on the web of his exclusion. Whatever the case, “Altered Carbon” will be an exciting entry to follow, especially since Kovacs is convinced that Quell (Renee Elise Goldsberry) is alive after all this time.
