Amazon Prime Video lost its TV rights to broadcast the UK's Premier League games. It failed to renew its contract with the English football league, and Sky Sports and TNT Sports have instead won the deals.
The new contracts are said to be the largest-ever sports media rights deal to have been signed in the United Kingdom. The agreement for the TV rights between the Premier League and Sky Sports and TNT Sports is worth £6.7 billion or roughly $8.5 billion.
Amazon Prime Left Out in the Auction
Sky Sports, which Comcast owns, managed to retain its hold on the rights to the Premier League. It was able to secure four out of the five packages of live games. On the other hand, TNT acquired the other rights packages in the auction.
Unfortunately, Amazon Prime Video was not able to secure any of the packages. As per Deadline, the TV rights auction did not leave space for said American subscription video-on-demand over-the-top streaming service providers.
At any rate, the Premier League TV rights packages include a minimum of 215 live matches per season. This has more than 140 matches during the weekends as well.
Live Broadcast Under New Channels
The Premier League completed the deals with TNT Sports and Sky Sports, and it covers five UK live packages. BBC Sport will also air the league's matches for the free-to-air highlights package. All of these agreements are in effect for four years, starting with the Premier League's Season 2025/26.
"We are delighted to announce new deals with Sky Sports and TNT Sports that will extend our partnership for a further four years and see more Premier League matches than ever before shown live from 2025/26 onwards," the chief executive officer of Premier League, Richard Masters, said in a news release. "As longstanding and valued partners, Sky Sports and TNT Sports are renowned for consistently delivering world-class coverage and programming."
The CEO added, "We are also extremely pleased to extend our partnership with BBC Sport, which will continue to bring weekly highlights of all Premier League matches to the widest possible audience in the UK. Match of the Day has been an institution for generations of football fans in this country and remains incredibly popular with fans of all ages.
