Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) announced plans to invest over $5 billion in Taiwan to expand its cloud computing arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS), by building new data centers. This major investment supports the launch of a new AWS Asia Pacific (Taipei) region and is aimed at boosting cloud infrastructure across Taiwan and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
The move reinforces AWS’s growing footprint in Taiwan, where it has operated since at least 2014. By enhancing its data infrastructure, Amazon aims to meet rising regional demand for cloud services, especially as businesses increasingly adopt artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
AWS is a critical part of Amazon’s long-term AI strategy, providing the computing power required to train and deploy advanced AI models. The division has emerged as a key revenue driver, benefiting from the global AI boom and the rapid digital transformation of enterprises.
This expansion not only positions AWS to serve more customers in Asia but also strengthens Taiwan’s role in the global cloud and AI ecosystem. The strategic investment underscores Amazon’s commitment to supporting innovation and digital growth in one of the region’s fastest-growing tech markets.
With the AI sector continuing to surge, Amazon’s bet on Taiwan reflects both competitive positioning and the increasing importance of reliable, scalable cloud infrastructure in driving future technologies. As global demand for AI capabilities accelerates, AWS's expansion is expected to play a central role in powering digital innovation across the Asia-Pacific.
