‘American Horror Story’ season 6 released multiple teaser trailers and images ahead of its September premiere but FX revealed that they were intentionally misleading fans with fake ones. However, he teased that one is accurate but give out more details.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, FX CEO John Landgraf revealed that the multiple teasers released for season 6 have all been a ruse to keep waiting fans guessing. He told reporters at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, "Every year, we lay out the themes and the new genre Ryan [Murphy] is going to be approaching; we thought it'd be fun [this year] to keep it a mystery — so we are."
Season 1 was entitled “Murder House” and featured a family haunted by ghosts in their home. Season 2 was called “Asylum” and was set in the 1960s in a mental institution for the criminally insane. Season 3 was entitled “Coven” and covered themes such as witchcraft and voodoo.
Season 4 was called “Freakshow” and took place in the 1950s as it featured a struggling freak show act. Finally, season 5 was entitled “Hotel” and featured a haunted old hotel with strange inhabitants including a vampire, a prostitute ghost, and a murder addict.
According to Vulture, Landgraf admitted that they purposefully misdirected viewers to keep things fresh. Of the season 6 marketing campaign, Landgraf admitted, "There are many more trailers than you've actually seen for hypothetical seasons of American Horror Story — different genres, different places… One of them is accurate; the others are all misdirects. So we’re just having fun with it, and we just thought it would be fun after five years of doing it one way.”
Landgraf reiterated that he didn’t see the anthology series ending any time soon as long as there are ideas to implement. He said, “We haven’t talked about an end game for ‘American Horror Story’… As long as you come up with good ideas, you can keep on going… Its only limits are your story and imagination.”
‘American Horror Story’ is a supernatural-horror and drama anthology series created and produced by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck. It is produced under 20th Century Fox Television, Ryan Murphy Productions and Brad Falchuck Teley-Vision. It originally aired on FX on October 2011.
Season 6 is scheduled to premiere on the network on September 14, 2016.
