New reports are stating that pop singer Katy Perry is in line to become one of the judges in the upcoming “American Idol” reboot.
According to TMZ, Sources familiar with the talks said Perry is very interested with the new role, and will consider scheduling her tour dates around the reboot’s taping schedule. Although ABC is also excited about the prospect, the current issue that needs to be resolved is money.
But you’d think with the possibility of hiring “American Idol” alums as new judges would be more sensible than hiring guests? Reportedly, the show had first reached out to its first winner, Kelly Clarkson, but negotiations had broken down. Supposedly, the issue is about money again, and it has been the cause of “American Idol” to end on Fox, and ABC’s priority when it comes to expenses.
Whatever the true reasons of Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson, who both have joined rival “The Voice” on NBC as new judges, the network claimed that the decision to hire them was a long time coming, Variety reported. NBC’s president of alternative and reality Paul Telegdy said in a conference call, “We’ve been talking to those two for a long time about joining “The Voice.” They’ve both been great coaches for “The Voice.” We didn’t make the connection” between any potential competition for roles in the upcoming reboot of “Idol.”
Plus, it was also reported that NBC did consider getting “Idol” in its TV content roster. NBC entertainment chair Bob Greenblatt added, “We did have conversations about ‘Idol,’ and recognized the franchise is a great name and title. [But] We’re going to keep with our hand. We don’t need “Idol.””
