Anthropic Restores Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 After U.S. Lifts AI Export Controls

Anthropic Restores Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 After U.S. Lifts AI Export Controls.

Anthropic announced late Tuesday that the U.S. government has lifted export restrictions on its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial intelligence models, allowing the company to begin restoring user access starting Wednesday. The move marks a significant policy shift after Washington imposed restrictions earlier this month that temporarily blocked foreign nationals from accessing the advanced AI systems.

The AI startup confirmed the development in a post on social media, following a Politico report that indicated the Trump administration was preparing to remove the export controls on the two flagship AI models. The decision clears the way for Anthropic to gradually resume broader availability of Fable 5 and Mythos 5.

Earlier in June, Anthropic abruptly suspended public access to both models after receiving a White House directive aimed at restricting their use by foreign users. The export controls reflected growing U.S. concerns over the national security implications of increasingly powerful artificial intelligence technologies.

Last week, Anthropic revealed that the U.S. government had already granted permission for selected "trusted" American organizations to access the Mythos model, signaling that officials were reconsidering the broader restrictions. The latest decision extends that reversal and enables the company to reopen access to a wider user base.

Anthropic had initially delayed the public launch of Fable 5 and Mythos 5 because of concerns that the advanced AI models could potentially be exploited to develop sophisticated cybersecurity attacks or other harmful capabilities. Before their wider release in early June, the company conducted consultations with several major U.S. financial institutions and organizations to assess the models' capabilities and associated risks.

The lifting of the export controls represents an important milestone for Anthropic and highlights the evolving U.S. approach to regulating advanced AI models as policymakers seek to balance innovation, commercial competitiveness, and national security concerns in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence industry.
