Apple is notorious for not allowing its consumers to tinker with its devices that would make for any kind of upgrade. In a recent discovery, however, this might finally change. A teardown of the iMac Pro seems to indicate that at least some parts of the product can be upgraded and apparently, an Apple internal memo confirms as much.
The teardown was done by IFIXIT and it would appear that at least the CPU, the SSD, and the RAM are all potentially upgradable. In the past, it would be hard-pressed to make any kind of changes to the internal components of any of Apple’s devices, mostly because the company was obsessed with soldering everything to the motherboard.
Of course, anyone who is willing to tear apart the $5,000 product likely won’t have problems just buying a new one if things go wrong. However, those who do take the risk might find that they can get more out of the expensive Apple computer than they could in the past, and this is actually a huge deal in the tech sector.
Up until 12 years ago, consumers could actually extend the lifespan of their Apple computers through upgrades, Gizmodo notes. These days, the only way to get a faster iMac or MacBook is to buy new ones.
According to a recent internal memo at Apple, however, things could be turning around in the Cupertino firm. The document, which was obtained by MacRumors, indicates that Apple Authorized Service Providers might be given permission to upgrade the RAM of the iMac Pro in the near future.
Apple had actually said last month that this may be possible, but the details at that time suggested that the users themselves could do the upgrading. As it turns out, this was just not going to happen, which should have been expected from Apple. On the other hand, the policy could vary depending on the country.
