Apple Intelligence’s Clean Up tool, launched with iOS 18.1 beta 3, has been criticized for its failure to recognize faces in the background, resulting in distorted and unsettling edits when foreground images are removed.
Apple Intelligence Faces Criticism for Failing to Recognize Faces
As reported by WCCFTECH, one of the two big Apple Intelligence features—the Clean Up tool—arrived with iOS 18.1 beta 3.
Its operation is analogous to that of Google's Magic Eraser. We have faith in the company's future generative AI capabilities, but the Clean Up tool is woefully inadequate when it comes to identifying faces in the background.
Nightmare Results from Foreground Image Removal
It needs to fill the empty space left by foreground image removal with pertinent imaging data. As you'll see in a little, the final product is a nightmare come true.
Although Apple Intelligence is quite good at editing and proofreading millions of characters on the spot, it has a hard time filling in face data when the image is cropped out of the frame.
Mukul Sharma shared a screenshot of this on X, captioning it "Peak Apple Intelligence moment."
Distorted Image After Using Clean Up Option
The content maker made an effort to crop off what seems to be a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 in his right hand. By selecting the Clean Up option, a clear animation is started to show the user what is being cropped out of the image.
The smartphone "cleans up" after Mukul's hand, but the aftermath is hideous; the person's right side appears to have melted.
Inability to Fill Missing Space is Regrettable
Despite the fact that it is not the feature's fault, the tech website states that Apple Intelligence's inability to accurately fill in the missing space is regrettable.
Because these generative AI tools have not yet been formally released, there are likely millions of parameters that need to be investigated and adjusted before we can observe a more polished outcome in action.
