With a new redesigned look, the Apple Watch Series 4 simply looks like the next-generation smartwatch tech enthusiasts have been waiting for. However, the physical redesign isn’t as impressive as the electrocardiogram (ECG) app that’s supposed to come out later this year.
As noted by the Daily Express’ David Snelling in his article about his struggles with a heart condition, the inclusion of an ECG monitor in the Apple Watch Series 4 could be a “game-changer” because it could save people a lot of valuable time and resources.
“Having had a personal experience of an irregular heart rhythm I know just how hard it is to get an ECG and catch the problem as soon it happens,” Snelling said.
“Apple is still to reveal when the ECG app will be pushed out to its new smartwatch but it has already been granted clearance by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US. If it works as well as Apple is predicting, this unique feature could not only reduce the anxiety for patients but help lower costs and precious time for our medical services,” he added.
As explained in the official Apple Watch Series 4 product page, all you have to do is to place your finger on the smartwatch’s Digital Crown if you want the device to check on the health of your heart, and results are automatically stored in the Health app. By touching the Digital Crown, the app can indicate whether you have a normal sinus rhythm or an atrial fibrillation, which is an irregular heart rhythm that can lead to serious conditions like blood clots, stroke, and heart failure.
With a feature like this, the Apple Watch Series 4 can help a lot of people identify health concerns quickly before things get worse.
The GPS-only variant of the Apple Watch Series 4 is priced at $399, while the one with GPS and cellular support is available for $499.
