When the iPhone obtains native generative AI features like ChatGPT, Apple will be almost two years behind OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google. That's what Mark Gurman said in his latest Power On newsletter for Bloomberg. This is because iOS 18 will be officially released.
What Artificial Intelligence Features Will iOS 18 Add to iPhone?
Apple will launch iOS 18 this summer at WWDC. Furthermore, iPhone owners will be able to test some of the AI capabilities in iOS 18 through beta versions, which will be available several months before the final release.
What new artificial intelligence features does Apple have planned? It's too early to get any confirmations, and Apple seldom talks about unpublished goods, whether hardware or software.
However, you may anticipate "Apple GPT," the informal moniker we use for Apple's ChatGPT opponent, to compete. Mark Gurman also provided some samples of what Apple's AI is rumored to be capable of.
Apple apparently intends to present its AI solutions at WWDC this summer. Since early last year, Apple has been working on its GPT, which takes the shape of a huge language model dubbed Ajax internally. Fans have heard about this codename before, including a recent one claiming Siri would acquire sophisticated AI functions with iOS 18.
According to Gurman, Apple has been developing the following artificial intelligence features for the iPhone:
- Auto-summary and auto-complete functionality for core applications and productivity tools (Pages, Keynote)
- improved playlist creation on Apple Music.
- Siri (a significant general revamp with an emphasis on AI)
- A new version of Xcode for developers features code completion.
- AppleCare tools for workers to aid customers with troubleshooting
That may not be detailed enough. However, it is consistent with what you can anticipate from ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Bard/Gemini, and others. Generative AI can help you summarize, produce text, and code.
Products such as ChatGPT and Copilot can serve as helpers, but not very personal ones. Google is developing its own smart assistant. An earlier article by the same Gurman outlined all of Apple's teams working on these generative AI features for the iPhone.
What About the iPhone Camera?
If there's one item lacking from Gurman's most recent report, it's generative AI tools for the iOS 18 Camera experience, according to BGR. It is believed that Apple will aim to match what rivals provide in terms of leveraging AI to modify photographs or even produce new content. That's only speculation, but Apple has to demonstrate that it can compete on all AI fronts.
It is also worth noting that there was a previous story on impending iOS generative AI features, which stated that Apple is testing software for producing photos, films, and three-dimensional scenery. To reiterate, generative AI software still has faults, including hallucinations. It is doubtful that Apple's Ajax will remove them.
Gurman suggests that Apple may take its time releasing generative AI tools via iOS 18. He says the totality of Apple's generative AI vision will take at least 2025 to fully scale. The tipster notes that Apple's delay could be a competitive disadvantage for the iPhone, especially since Samsung will put generative AI front and center with next week's Galaxy S24 announcement.
Gurman does not discuss generative AI capability for other Apple devices. Along with the iPhone, I anticipate Apple will release its GPT on the iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro devices. WWDC 2024 should clarify everything, but we'll have to wait a few months to see it in action.
