Apple’s Comprehensive Effort Ensures Safe Passage for Engineer’s Grandmother from Ukraine
In 2023, Apple and CEO Tim Cook provided critical support to assist an Apple engineer’s grandmother in evacuating Ukraine amid the conflict, per Wccftech. The former Apple engineer, known as Kate on the social platform X, shared that Apple’s security team, along with translators, drivers, and other personnel, coordinated efforts to help her grandmother escape from Kharkiv, a city heavily impacted by attacks on civilians. She emphasized that her decision to share this information was personal, clarifying that it was not intended as a promotion for Apple.
According to Kate, Apple’s efforts included hiring security contractors and coordinating with local resources in Ukraine. She described the operation as “full-blown,” involving frequent communication through WhatsApp with coordinators and drivers. Apple’s support extended to covering hotel accommodations and transportation costs to safety from Poland. Reflecting on this extraordinary assistance, she expressed profound gratitude, noting that she had “never seen anything like it” and felt the support was “beyond anything an employer would have done.”
Former Apple Engineer Shares Personal Story of Tim Cook’s Support Amid Ukraine Crisis
Kate’s decision to share this experience publicly came unexpectedly. She explained that while organizing files on her Google Drive, she found a screenshot of a message from Tim Cook, sent during the operation, thanking her for her appreciation and extending best wishes to her grandmother. She added that she initially refrained from discussing the event, noting that she “wasn’t in the state to talk about this” at the time. She clarified that her motivation for sharing the story was purely personal, underscoring that the post was “not an affiliation or promotion of Apple in any way.” Kate and her family are relieved and grateful that her grandmother is safe.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine, widely regarded as Europe’s most extensive conflict since World War II, has had significant impacts across industries. In response, numerous tech firms have adapted their operations, with some, including Apple, adjusting or suspending services in Russia and complying with local directives to limit specific applications during wartime.
