Ubisoft offered new details on “Assassin's Creed Infinity” during the Ubisoft Forward event last Saturday. While most information is still up in the air, the publisher confirmed some crucial details about the project and its plan to bring back multiplayer experiences through the upcoming platform.
The first thing that “Assassin's Creed” vice president executive producer Marc-Alexis Côté said at the showcase was that Infinity is “not a game, per se.” In a blog post after the event, Ubisoft said it will serve as a “centralized hub” for games of the franchise.
The latest information indicates “Assassin's Creed Infinity” will primarily serve as a platform, where players can access multiple upcoming games of the franchise. The publisher also confirmed that “Assassin's Creed” projects codenamed Hexe and Red will be the first titles included in the platform. “Assassin's Creed: Red” will be an all-new game set in feudal Japan, while details about the Hexe project remain scarce.
Ubisoft suggested in previous statements that “Assassin's Creed Infinity” will also feature elements of the franchise that are already familiar to its fans. One of them could be multiplayer games. “We're actually investigating how we will bring back standalone, multiplayer experiences into the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ universe, all connected to the Infinity hub,” Côté added.
“Assassin's Creed” has had well-received multiplayer modes over the years featured in “AC: Brotherhood” and “AC: Black Flag.” But the sad news is these titles, along with “Assassin's Creed 3,” were part of the list of games that Ubisoft will decommission next month. Starting Oct. 1, fans will no longer be able to access multiplayer features and other online services of these older titles.
The decommissioning of these games now appears to be another reason for fans to look forward to “Assassin's Creed Infinity,” especially if Ubisoft pursues the addition of multiplayer on the platform. But it is still unknown when the platform will launch. The publisher said in July 2021 that Infinity is still in the early stages of development. During last Saturday’s Ubisoft Forward, the company only said “Assassin's Creed Infinity” will be one of the projects that will be released “in the coming years.”
