“Attack on Titan” season 3 has been a blistering reversal of many of the themes from the anime's first two seasons. What used to be a story about the Scout Division battling those that would threaten humanity within the great walls has turned into uncovering a conspiracy from inside human society which encourages the violence to continue in a cycle that benefits only the wealthy.
“Attack on Titan's” last episode has left fans with Erwin on the brink of execution while Eren and Historia have been captured by the Military Police. Eren is in danger of being consumed for his own Titan powers, while Historia may be assassinated due to her royal blood that effectively makes her an heir to the throne, which none of the current people in power want to happen.
Aside from the race against time, the scouts gain new allies in Marlo Freudenberg and Hitch Dreyse, who help the team capture a Military Police officer to interrogate about the location of Eren and Historia. In a side story arc, we are also shown Flegel Reeves, who was being hunted by the Military Police, being rescued by the citizens of Trost and becoming the new leader of the Reeves company.
"Attack on Titan" season 3 episode 5's preview is short and sweet, teasing a potential revolution against those who have been trying to protect the King by keeping the nature of the Titans secret. Fans are also shown a melodramatic shot of Erwin, who may be executed in the upcoming episode. It is unsure whether the rest of the Survey Corps scouts will be able to make it in time to rescue Erwin considering that Captain Levi and his team are focused on rescuing Eren and Historia as well.
“Attack on Titan” season 3 episode 5 follows the show's once-a-week Monday schedule and will air on Aug. 20. Fans of the series can catch the show streaming on Crunchyroll.
