The anime series based on the manga created by Hajime Isayama still has plenty of events to cover from where the third season concluded. This is why the production of “Attack on Titan” season 4 was a no-brainer. However, what might have caught fans by surprise was the announcement that it was going to be its final installment.
There are no significant differences in the narrative and timeline between Isayama’s manga and anime series. This means that if “Attack on Titan” season 4 — the final season — premieres in fall 2020, the manga series should be ending in the near future, too.
‘Attack on Titan’ season 4: Final story arc’s climax is ‘imminent’
The end of the series, both in the manga and in “Attack on Titan” season 4, should not come as a total surprise because, at this point, the new chapters have been known to be part of an untitled final arc. In a recent interview during a special exhibit for the series, Isayama also confirmed (via @AttackOnFans), “The climax is imminent.”
Technically, the word climax refers to the most crucial part of a plot where the main protagonist is usually seen facing the biggest challenge yet. The way the character decides or resolves the problem will ultimately lead to the end. Isayama’s statement is true just by judging from the events of chapter 119, which ended in a major cliffhanger. This could mean that the manga series could end sometime between late 2019 to the first half of 2020 or some months before “Attack on Titan” season 4 premieres.
“Attack on Titan” season 4 spoilers: How the series will end
In a documentary released by Jonetsu Tairiku in 2018, fans were given a glimpse at how Isayama sees the ending of the series. The likely final scene of “Attack on Titan” season 4 features a grown man carrying a baby and saying, “You’re free.”
The way Isayama drew the last panel of “Attack on Titan” has the man’s back facing the readers, so it sparked some interesting theories as to who it is and who is the baby he is carrying. On a good note, fans will get to see who it is first on the manga before waiting quite a long time in the “Attack on Titan” season 4 finale.
