Packaging firm Amcor has developed Australia’s prototype plastic food wrapper aimed at reducing plastic waste in the environment in partnership with several companies.
The wrapper is first to be used in Nestle's KitKat chocolate-covered wafer bar.
Nestlé, CurbCycle, iQ Renew, Licella, Viva Energy Australia, LyondellBasell, REDcycle, and Taghleef Industries all bought a wealth of experience to the project to produce Australia’s first soft plastic food wrapper made with recycled content.
The companies shared their knowledge on collecting and processing soft plastic waste, turning it back into oil using advanced recycling technology, and creating the prototype wrapper.
According to Simon Roy, VP and general manager of Amcor Flexibles Australia and New Zealand, their commitment to ensuring all their packaging are designed to be recyclable or reusable by 2025.
He noted that the wrapper has a responsible end of life where it can be reprocessed and reused in food-grade packaging.
Sandra Martinez, CEO of Nestlé Australia, said manufacturers have a key role in creating market conditions that ensure all stakeholders view soft plastics as a resource and not waste.
