With more than a year left before the premiere of “Avatar 2,” it is not that surprising to hear news of new cast members. This one will particularly excite sci-fi fans as it was confirmed “Star Trek: Discovery” star Michelle Yeoh joins the James Cameron-directed franchise in an all-new character.
The confirmation of Yeoh’s addition came from the official Twitter page of the movie series. The announcement indicates that the actress will appear both in “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3” for the role of Dr. Karina Mogue. It is unclear, though, whether this meant Yeoh has just signed her “Avatar” deal or if she has been filming with the cast and crew prior to breaking the news.
Michelle has always created unique and memorable characters. I look forward to working with her to do the same thing on the Avatar sequels. https://t.co/ExokGb0YZg

Meanwhile, Cameron also warmly welcomed Yeoh to “Avatar 2.” The critically-acclaimed director said on Twitter, “Michelle has always created unique and memorable characters. I look forward to working with her to do the same thing on the ‘Avatar’ sequels.” Yeoh is also popularly known for her role in the movie “Crazy Rich Asians.”
Sci-fi fans are generally happy of having Yeoh in “Avatar 2.” But some of them were a little worried that it might also mean she will have less or entirely zero screen time on “Star Trek: Discovery.” Yeoh the role of Capt. Philippa Georgiou in the CBS All Access franchise. It can be recalled that the network announced earlier this year that they greenlit a spin-off series focused on Yeoh’s character, which reports have described being a live-action drama.
Details on Yeoh’s character for “Avatar 2” are still under wraps, though. Judging from her name, she would be the new scientist possibly to study Pandora. However, whether or not she will be a friend to Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) is still a mystery.
How the plot of “Avatar 2” will tie in with the first movie is still unknown. However, cast members and Cameron confirmed that the sequel will include a significant amount of underwater scenes and will revive characters that were presumed dead in the first film. “Avatar 2” is slated to premiere on Dec. 18, 2020.
