BTS released “Dynamite” last month and it is their first English song. The South Korean boy band immediately made history with this track not just on YouTube but in the world’s most prestigious Billboard music chart.
Last week, BTS’ English track debuted at no. 1 at Billboard’s Hot 100. With that feat, the boy group consisting of seven members including RM, Junkook, V, Jin, Jimin, J-Hope and Suga became the very first South Korean act to dominate the said music chart. A few years ago, PSY’s “Gangnam Style” was a worldwide hit as well but it only managed to reach no. 2 as its highest rank.
Dominating the chart for more than a week
As per Billboard, "Dynamite" did not leave the top spot ranking since it placed no. 1 last week. They are also no. 1 in the Digital Song Sales chart and it was added that in the all-time record of Billboard, out of the 43 songs that have made it to Hot 100’s no. 1, BTS’ “Dynamite” is the 20th song to have managed to stay at the top for two consecutive weeks.
Moreover, for a group, BTS is the first team to achieve this since Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" came out in 1998. This rock ballad was no. 1 for four weeks in the chart.
In any case, BTS made it to top ranking after it accumulated high radio airplay volumes, sales data and streaming in the U.S. These are the basis for determining the ranking in Hot 100.
BTS’ success and what it means to Kpop
With the unpredicted massive success of BTS, the group just opened more doors for the Kpop musicians to be recognized around the world. This also paved the way for the South Korean government to support the Kpop stars and the entertainment sect.
As reported by Pulse News, the Ministry of Economy and Finance revealed that they are funding a project that will help the singers to perform for the international audience even at this time of the coronavirus pandemic. The agency got the inspiration after BTS’ online concert was a huge success.
The said ministry started the “K+X budget” that will fund a platform where Kpop stars can stage shows and concert for worldwide viewing. This is currently being built and expected to be launched soon. Meanwhile, BTS is expected to be nominated at the Grammy’s for their massively hit song “Dynamite.”
