Thousands gathered at Minnesota’s state Capitol in St. Paul on Friday to honor slain state Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were fatally shot in a politically motivated attack earlier this month. The couple lay in state, drawing a steady stream of mourners that stretched across the Capitol plaza. This somber tribute marked a historic moment, as Hortman became the first woman to receive such honors in the Capitol Rotunda, and her husband the first civilian to do so.
Former U.S. President Joe Biden arrived in the afternoon, pausing quietly before the flower-draped caskets, flanked by portraits and an urn containing the remains of their golden retriever, Gilbert, also killed in the attack.
The alleged shooter, 57-year-old Vance Boelter, is accused of impersonating a police officer to gain access to the couple’s home on June 14, where he shot and killed them. He also reportedly targeted another Democratic lawmaker, Senator John Hoffman, and his wife, who survived. Boelter was arrested after a two-day manhunt—the largest in Minnesota’s history—and faces both state and federal murder charges.
Authorities found notebooks in Boelter’s possession listing names of Democratic lawmakers and abortion rights advocates, indicating premeditated political intent. The incident underscores growing concerns over rising political violence in the U.S., fueled by deep partisan divides.
The public viewing concluded at 5 p.m., with thousands having paid respects throughout the day. A private funeral was scheduled for Saturday.
This tragedy has not only shaken Minnesota politics but also reignited national debates on political extremism and public safety for elected officials, especially in a time of escalating ideological tensions across the country.
