Charlie Shrem, bitcoin advocate and the co-founder of BitInstant, a bitcoin exchange has been released from imprisonment who was convicted in 2014 of money laundering and acting as an unlicensed money transmitter.
Shrem was held in a high-security federal prison camp in Pennsylvania since March last year. He was arrested in January 2014, found guilty of supplying a substantial amount of $1 million in bitcoin to darknet marketplace Silk Road users through the now-defunct bitcoin exchange BitInstant.
“A few weeks ago I was released from Lewisburg FPC. I want to thank the hundreds of people who wrote, sent books, money, magazines, and their support,” Shrem stated in his blog.
Shrem was sentenced to two years of imprisonment in December 2014 following an unsuccessful plea bargain. He later surrendered himself to Lewisburg Federal Prison Camp in Pennsylvania in March last year, Cryptocoinsnews stated.
“Currently, I’m home in southern Pennsylvania where Courtney and I have relocated temporarily. I’m excited to move forward onto new projects and looking forward to seeing what everyone has been working on,” he added.
