‘Black Mirror’ season 4 is expected to return to Netflix sometime in 2017. Series creator Charlie Brooker revealed some details for the upcoming season as well as teased the Jodie Foster-directed episode.
The highly-anticipated fourth installment of the British science-fiction anthology series is expected to return to Netflix sometime in 2017. The series focuses on dark and satirical themes often connected to the consequences of society’s dependence and obsession over technology.
The series was first aired by Channel 4 but Netflix took over and commissioned a third season last September 2015. Season 3 was later released worldwide on October 2016. Although no official release date has been announced for season 4, the series is expected to return later this year.
Series creator and executive producer Charlie Brooker shared details on the upcoming season during an interview with The Telegraph. Brooker teased that the Jodie Foster-directed episode will contain a mother-daughter relationship and will have “"the tone of an indie movie, an indie drama.”
Brooker also talked about how Foster came to get involved in the series saying, "Netflix got in touch with her. She's done episodes of ‘Orange Is The New Black’ before, and they spoke to her and sent her our script, and within a week of that we were were Skypeing. It was a bit odd, to be Skyping with Jodie Foster – but I did a good job of hiding my delight."
He explained that they will be carrying on season 3’s varying tones and subject matter on to season 4. He said, “…so we've got some strikingly different tones and looks... One [episode]'s shooting in Iceland, which hasn't been announced yet… We've got one that's overtly comic, much more overtly comic than anything we've done. It's got fairly mainstream comic elements, but also some really unpleasant stuff that happens. I haven't even seen the rough cut of it yet."
Meanwhile, Australian-Canadian director John Hillcoat is reportedly set to direct an episode in season 4. He is best known for his work on feature films such as 1996’s ‘To Have & to Hold,’ 2005’s ‘The Proposition,’ and 2016’s ‘Triple 9.’ According to Digital Spy, Hillcoat’s episode will star 35-year old English actress Andrea Riseborough.
The episode is reportedly titled “Crocodile” and Riseborough will serve as one of the main protagonists. Riseborough starred in multi-BAFTA-nominated film ‘Nocturnal Animals’ released in 2016. She also won awards for her work on 2012’s ‘Shadow Dancer’ and 2014’s ‘Birdman.’
‘Black Mirror’ season 4 is yet to announce an official release date but the series is expected to return to Netflix sometime in 2017.
