Marvel Entertainment and Disney have yet to make any announcements about the next films under the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4. But many are already banking on “Black Panther 2” being part of that lineup. However, fans might have to wait until summer for the official updates.
First, it is important to note that Disney CEO Bob Iger already confirmed that MCU updates are arriving in summer (via Variety). There are two events happening in summer where major MCU announcements including “Black Panther 2” could be revealed — the San Diego Comic-Con and the D23 Expo. As for SDCC, happening on July 18-21 this year, it can be recalled that Marvel decided to skip their usual panel at Hall H in the recent years.
Some reports are suggesting that it could be because Disney, the conglomerate that owns Marvel, has already set up its own convention D23 Expo. This year, it will happen on Aug. 20-25 in Anaheim, California. If this is the case, fans will have to wait a little bit longer to hear whether “Black Panther 2” is already in active development or will be.
Both in 2017 and 2018, however, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige clarified they did not replace SDCC with D23 Expo. They deliberately skipped the San Diego-based convention for other reasons such as avoiding revealing spoilers as much as possible. “Everyone knows what we're doing over the next few years,” Feige told THR in 2015. “I really have a belief: If you can't go to Comic-Con and overdeliver, then don't go.” But with so many projects anticipated to be in the pipeline like “Black Panther 2,” Marvel might finally return to Hall H this year.
“Avengers: Endgame,” as the title says, was a great conclusion to the first era of movie superheroes based on the classic Marvel comic books. The Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) died while Captain America (Chris Evans) retired and chose to grow old with Peggy (Hayley Atwell). But it was not the end for other superheroes such as T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) that calls for the making of “Black Panther 2.”
Plans on how producers will tackle the future of MCU is still unknown. But standalone movies post-“Endgame” is obviously happening with the announcement of Tom Holland’s second movie in the franchise. Also, the first Wakanda-based movie has only scratched the surface of the fictional African country that has just opened its borders by the end of the 2018-released film. That leaves so much more material to use to continue T’Challa’s adventures in “Black Panther 2.”
