As of July 8, 2025, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has reached a major milestone, holding more than 700,000 BTC. Valued at more than $75 billion, this positions IBIT as the biggest institutional holder of Bitcoin, controlling around 55% of all BTC owned by US spot Bitcoin ETFs. This fast gathering places BlackRock very close to the estimated 1.1 million BTC associated with Bitcoin's elusive creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, a level never achieved for any other company.
Launched only 18 months ago in January 2024, IBIT's rapid rise highlights the growing need for spot Bitcoin ETFs and emphasizes the growing power of institutional investors in the cryptocurrency industry. With 600,000 BTC, MicroStrategy is a well-known corporate holder whose fast growth eclipses that of other significant US Bitcoin ETFs like Fidelity's FBTC (203,000 BTC) and Grayscale's GBTC (184,000 BTC).
BlackRock's aggressive acquisition strategy, shown by daily inflows sometimes above $160 million, strengthens IBIT's prominent market presence. This continuous and large accumulation shows the rapidly increasing mainstream acceptance of Bitcoin as a valid institutional asset, therefore merging digital currencies into conventional financial portfolios even further.
