It has been 20 years since Blizzard sparked the flames in the hearts of role-playing enthusiasts with the original Diablo game, and now, the studio is celebrating two decades of carnage by using all of its video game titles. Every single one of Blizzard’s current IP will feature the gothic RPG in one way or another, some of which will be simple portraits, while others recreate the dungeon crawler in its classic form.
The Blizzard titles that will feature dedications to the Diablo franchise include Overwatch, World of Warcraft, and Hearthstone, Polygon reports. However, these are just the side-notes. The main event that pays homage to the iconic series is the special event that players of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls will experience.
Called The Darkening of Tristram, Blizzard will be launching the experience on December 31st and will feature the original dungeon under the cathedral at Tristram. Fans of the original game will instantly recall this location for playing a major role in the game and in the defeat of Diablo for the first time.
The setting will basically be the same, with the mechanics of Diablo III preserved. However, there will be an overlay of a classic filter, which makes it an authentic experience for players of the franchise.
The games that will feature new portraits include Heroes of the Storm and Starcraft II. Overwatch will feature in-game sprays that harken to Diablo’s class system and players can even get Diablo as their icon. World of Warcraft players might also feel a jolt once they start seeing unfamiliar characters and creatures that will either annoy them to death or eat their faces.
Gamespot has the full rundown regarding the changes and additions that the anniversary will bring to which games. The event was announced during the most recent BlizzCon and it would appear that the developers are making good on their promises.
