Despite the seething outrage from the gaming community after learning that the new Portal game would be a Bridge Constructor tie-in, it seems the game is actually good. This is the impression that a lot of reviewers are giving after trying it out, at least. Who would have thought that the physics-defying portal gun could be useful for building actual bridges?
As The Verge notes, when it was announced that a new Portal game would be released as a Bridge Constructor feature, it was about as far from what fans expected as it could possibly be. Far from the first-person puzzle platformer that it was in the past, Valve collaborated with ClockStone Software to create what might just be the most unexpectedly good partnerships of 2017.
For those who haven’t played Bridge Constructor before, the game basically involves building a bridge that would be used by vehicles to cross from point to point. However, the title uses a fairly realistic physics aspect, which forces players to pay close attention to the design and structure of the bridges they create.
By adding the Portal element in the game, Bridge Constructor received an extra level of complexity, but it also provided players with another interesting tool to work with. This is the secret for why Bridge Constructor Portal seems to resonate with reviewers.
Many publications, including Kotaku, thought that the game would not be worth playing. After a few hours with the title, it seems this dismissive attitude was quickly replaced with praise for such a solid puzzle game.
The implementation of the Portal aspects in the game is also apparently excellently geared towards helping fans of the series instantly find the gameplay familiar. It’s one of those moments when the gaming community is reminded of just how good of a developer Valve still is despite its limited releases.
